INFO

Chris Olwage is an experienced performer of many genres of dance and performance art. He is best known for his appearance on New Zealand's Got Talent 2012 as the ballet boy en pointe. His Black Swan was a smash hit and since has been danced at many corporate and private functions. His goal is to create and perform in works that offer alternative and off the wall perspectives of dance and society. He likes to challenge boundaries and push the limits, all whilst entertaining an audience. He has done everything from Burlesque and cabaret to Ballet and contemporary, dabbled in jazz and hip hop and even delighted in the latin styles of dancing.

Chris is also an acrobatics and circus enthusiast. He attends regular training at a gymnastics facility where he hones his tumbling skills and perfects his aerial tissue techniques. He loves playing with contortion and challenging himself whilst en pointe (when he dances ballet on his toes).

When he is not performing he is a teacher of contemporary dance, burlesque and ballet at the Candy Lane Studios as well as teaching Zumba, Pump, Pilates, ABT, X-fit and ballet Fitness at the University of Auckland Recreation Center. He has a BA in Contemporary dance, a diploma in personal training, is a qualified Gymnastics coach and a trained competitor in Shaolin Kempo Gung-fu.

In 2010 he received a scholarship to Timothy Gordon's Ballet Dance Intensive and has performed in works by the choreographers Charles Koroneho, Lois Potiki-Bryant, Anne Dewey, Chris Jannides, and Neil Ieremia. He trained under the likes of Michael Parmentor, Charene Griggs and Kimbrian Bergh whilst at Unitec.

Not only is Chris a performer but an accomplished costumer too. Most of the Costumes he dons are all creations that he has made from scratch. Drafting his own patterns through to sewing and fitting the garments all by himself. When you hire him to create a work he oversees all aspects from choreography through to costume and design... He effectively is a one-stop shop!

Through his recent successes Chris has been called to put works together for shows (Queerlesque, Pride Party, Club Med Bintan Island... DNA bar) choreograph works (Kristen High School, Golden Carnie Awards, Candy Lane Recital)and perform (Candy Lane Dance Company, NZGT, Queerlesque, And Corporate functions). His experience is ever growing and his enthusiasm and lust to do more is unending.

His recent collaboration with Lisa Jurakovich, in which the pair took the stage dancing a comical rendition of a ballet pas de deux with the gender roles completely reversed, saw the duo take first place in Showdance at the Kiwi Classic Dance competition in April 2013. Furthermore, He made it into the top 30 acts in the country on NZGT 2012.
